A fine copy of David Francis Barry’s famous portrait of the Hunkpapa leader Sitting Bull, taken in the 1880s before his death in the Wounded Knee Massacre. Barry took most of his photographs of indigenous subjects between 1878 and 1883, using a portable photographic studio. He traveled to locations including Fort Buford and Fort Yates in the Dakotas and Fort Assiniboine in MontanaThe Lakota people nicknamed him "Little Shadow Catcher." He set up a studio in West Superior, Wisconsin, in 1890, selling photographs from his earlier travels.
