Taken at Fort Sill in the 1870s, this subject of this portrait is identified as the nephew of the Kiowa-Apache leader Pacer (Peso, Essa-queta: Kiowa Apache Head Chief). It was taken by William Soule, the Massachusetts-born photographer who had a prolific career in the American West beginning with his relocation to fort Dodge in 1867.
