A rare collection of albumen photographs documenting daily life in Costa Rica in the late 19th-century, including portraits of the country's indigenous population.
Included images show: a group of wash-women at public wash tanks; a woman with her baby in Talamanca; studio portrait of a flower seller; three views of a public school (one identified elsewhere as being in Candalaria); two photos captioned “life in Costa Rica” and one captioned “a Costa Rican family.”
While uncredited, the photographs are likely the work of the commercial outfit Paynter Brothers, who also worked with H.N. Rudd. We have found a few of the photographs reproduced elsewhere with Paynter Bros. credits.
