Darius Kinsey was a commercial and studio photographer who is best remembered for his iconic, early 20th-century views of the logging industry in the pacific northwest. He is a quintessential example of a working photographer whose output is now understood for the great art that it is. This impressive photograph, showing an likewise impressive felled tree, has a caption reading “Washington Pan American Office Log,” leading us to believe the massive piece of timber was used to create a building for the Pan American Exposition in Buffalo, New York. It is also possible this photograph was at one point a single panel for a much larger panoramic image but, as with big trees and old photos alike, we only have what we are left with.
