Doc Forbes was a pioneering Canadian tattoo artist and a foundational figure in the art of traditional design. He discovered the world of tattoo at sixteen years old, while traveling with the circus. After traveling extensively across Canada, he eventually settled in Victoria, British Columbia, near the Esquimalt Naval Base, providing work for the local sailors. In 1958, shortly before these photos were shot, he was only one of three tattoo artists practicing in Canada.
