In 1888 the Calaveras Consolidated Gold Mining Co., also known as the “Old English Company”, was organized in London. The company purchased several claims in the Carson Hill area including New York (Finnegan), Stephens, Brown, Santa Cruz, Mexican, Extension, and Relief. A 20-stamp mill, operated by Pelton wheel, was constructed on the Santa Cruz claim with an electric plant for lighting and pumping. Good ore was found at first, but soon was lost and the mill closed in 1892.
