Isaiah West Taber was a pioneering American photographer, born in 1830 in Massachusetts. in 1864 he began working in the studio of San Francisco photographers Bradley & Rulofson and would open his own studio in 1871. Known for his landscapes and portraits of California notables and actors/actresses, he is perhaps most recognized as the photographer who took over Carleton Watkins' Yosemite Art Gallery, and continued to publish his photographs. This transition took place in the mid-1870s, and Taber's focus from that point forward was primarily concerned with landscape photography of the American West. He continued to build on the archive he had acquired through Watkins misfortune, and successfully grew a business that, by the 1890s, included studios in London. Like many, Taber lost everything in the 1906 San Francisco earthquake and fire abruptly putting an end to his photographic career.
