Charles Malcolm Campbell was born in 1905 in Dayton, Ohio. Not long after graduating from the Cleveland School of Art in 1928, Campbell was hired by the Works Progress Administration. He helped with a number of murals before traveling the country and briefly staying in Texas to write and paint. He was once again hired by a New Deal program in Cleveland where he painted for the Treasury Art Project until 1942. Around this period Campbell moved to Los Angeles, where he also sold his art at local galleries. In 1952, Campbell relocated to New Orleans where he opened his own gallery. He moved once again to Phoenix where he remained until his death in 1985. Campbell produced work steadily throughout his lifetime and his early works are in the collections of the Whitney Museum of American Art and the Cleveland Museum; as well as private collections. His public works can still be seen in federal buildings in Ohio, Texas, and Indiana.
