A handsome self-portrait of pioneering Oakland photographer Elon D. Ormsby, smoking a cigar by the fire. Born in Michigan in 1835, Ormsby first came to the city in 1866, eventually opening a studio at 1055 Broadway. An 1887 article, published in the Oakland Tribune, proclaimed that “Oakland has many things which redound to her glory and not the least and among them are the artistic productions of Ormsby, the photographer. His portraits are accurate, perfect in execution, and superb in finish.”
