This powerful photograph shows a group of Southern Cheyenne men serving as U.S. Army Scouts in present day Canadian County, Oklahoma. The photograph was either taken at the Darlington Agency or nearby Fort Reno. It was taken by the important Western photographer, William S. Prettyman.
The photograph has been affixed to a board bearing a partial photographer’s credit which reads “.S. Prettyman..Cowboys at Dinner…” Presumably, Prettyman trimmed an unused board, intended for a larger image, and repurposed it as a mount for this photo. The mount verso also bears a manuscript caption which reads, “Indian scouts of the U.S. Army, Cheyenne Tribe.”
