A fun and dynamic group of material pertaining to Pinkney Roberts “The Fashion Plate MC.” Born in Virginia in 1919, Pinkney R. Webster Jr. spent his youth in Maryland. There, he worked as a comic and spun records, earning the title of Baltimore’s youngest M.C. After serving in World War Two, he spent several decades dancing, singing, emceeing and producing acts. Throughout his long career, he worked with Billie Holiday, Dinah Washington, Sarah Vaughan, Ruth Brown and Al Hibbler, among many others. He was given the name “fashion plate” due to his sharp way of dressing. He passed away in 2013 at the age of 94.

Highlights from the collection include an early flyer for a 1947 show called “Lady Be Lovely”; produced in High Point, NC, with Roberts along with Evelyn Lee, Irine McLaurin, Nat Macon and the berber Johnson Trio; a dynamic photograph of Roberts taken by the noted Philadelphia-based, African American photographer Jack T. Franklin; charming promotional photos of Roberts and his backing groups the Pink Shades and the Au-Go Go Rebellion; pieces of music and lyrics to different routines; pages from Black newspapers with ads for Roberts’ shows; contracts, telegrams, and more.
