Margaret Florence Harker

Margaret Harker (1920-2013) was a British artist who dedicated her life to photography and photographic education. Beginning in 1940, she studied photography at the Regent Street Polytechnic (now the University of Westminster), becoming a full-time lecturer there in 1943. She would go on to become the UK's first female professor of photography and later founded the country's first photography degree course. In 1958, she was the first woman elected president of the Royal Photographic Society.

Best-remembered as an architectural photographer, the present photograph was completed during her time at Regent Street Polytechnic, and showcases her assured understanding of abstract image-making.
