The pioneering, Los Angeles-based photography dealer G. Ray Hawkins employed charming, unconventional methods to market his shows, portfolios, and fresh inventory. He often produced photographic ephemera which was in sly conversation with the works he showed. Here, Stieglitz’s 1907 masterpiece “The Steerage” has been cheekily repurposed to advertise a 1986 exhibition of the gallery’s “new arrivals.”
