The Musée de Boulaq in Cairo was established in 1863 by the French Egyptologist Auguste Mariette as Egypt’s first national museum of antiquities.
Housed in a converted building along the Nile, the museum assembled an extraordinary collection of ancient Egyptian sculpture, sarcophagi, funerary objects, and archaeological discoveries, many excavated under Mariette’s direction. Its establishment marked an important shift toward the preservation of Egyptian antiquities within Egypt, rather than their removal to European collections. The museum suffered serious damage during the Nile flood of 1878, and photographs created prior became important records of the collection and installations as they had existed.
