Neuman Rist was a prominent member and president of the Hackney Society of Spiritualists, an organization active in East London during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Contemporary reports in the Spiritualist journal "Light" document his involvement with the society from at least 1898, when he spoke publicly about his conversion to Spiritualism and his experiences within the movement. He subsequently served as president, overseeing meetings, lectures, clairvoyant demonstrations, seances and other Spiritualist activities. Rist was also associated with the spirit photographer Ada Emma Deane, appearing in her photographs produced during the earliest period of her career, around 1920–1921.
