A handsome portrait with an interesting story, Richard Komas was a Ute man who was brought east by Major J.W. Powell after his 1867 territorial survey. Komas was educated by Powell, and later attended Lincoln College in Pennsylvania, then returned to D.C. to work as a clerk in Powell's office.
The photograph is credited on the mount to William Henry Jackson, and was published in conjunction with F.V. Hayden's 1871 territorial survey, but it was actually taken by Alexander Gardner in Washington D.C. 1872.
